KNOWING THE MOST COMMON WORDS BY SIGHT
Teachers Call This Skill:
HIGH FREQUENCY (SIGHT) WORDS
High frequency words, also referred to as sight words, are commonly used words that young children are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight, so that they can automatically recognize these words in print without having to use any strategies to decode. Several sight words don’t follow phonetic rules, so we want students to know them automatically!
High frequency words will make up 50-75% of the books your child will begin reading. Children who can recognize these words quickly will strengthen their reading fluency and comprehension. When children can read these words effortlessly, they can spend their energy on sounding out more difficult words or understanding the story’s meaning.
