Practice Letter Sounds

Check the "What order should my child learn phonics skills in?" section and have your child practice reading words with the letter sounds they already know.

Try this virtual blending board to make words for your child to read.

Tips:

1. Make sure you watch the video tutorial first (embed video)

2. Make sure you only select letters and letter combinations that your child already knows the sounds for.

3. It's ok to have your child read "nonsense" words (words that aren't actually real words) - it's an important reading skill to be able to put different sounds together AND to be able to tell if a word is real or not.

Practice Blending

Part 1: Write the letters and letter combinations that your child already knows on small pieces of paper or post-its. Put 2 or 3 letters in a row, and have your child say each sound, then blend the sounds together to make a word. 

Part 2: Change the first, second, or third letter to make a new word, and have your child say each sound, then blend the sounds together to make a word. 

Repeat to make lots of new words!
